Indoor positioning systems are currently one of the hot issues in the field of information technology, which has attracted the attention both of industry and academia. Positioning technology research based on the WLAN (wireless local area network) has become rapid warming with the rapid development of wireless local area network. The commercial wireless LAN-based positioning system products began to enter the market in 2004. Existing wireless local area network positioning systems are not sophisticated, but this marks the wireless LAN indoor positioning system as the new direction of development and the enormous potential applications.Main job of this paper is as follows:(1) Indoor positioning system architecture based on three-level system architecture is presented. Based on the existing location technology, indoor positioning technology, positioning systems, and summary and comparison of the location algorithm, this paper presents a three-level system architecture for the indoor positioning system, interface between levels are standardized, system scalability is improved, a theoretical basis is developed and provided for indoor positioning systems developmen.(2) An indoor localization algorithm based on WLAN with area partition and path first is designed. At first, targeted area is divided into different regions with each region have the same signal propagation model. In the region, the signal radio map is computed with path first principle based on the area partition. The signal radio map calculated by algorithm will be to minimize the workload of the system deployment, and allow the system to have high practical value.(3) An indoor positioning system is specifically designed and developed. software requirements specification is described first, and then the system architecture and communication protocol are designed, and then detailed design and implementation under the architecture of the various parts are separately carried out, and finally the most important three functions of the system are tested, including sampling signal processing, location request service, and traces request service.Through practical environmental testing, the algorithm based on WLAN with area partition and path first is useful in positioning accuracy, positioning time, and computational complexity. Furthermore, the system can make use of existing wireless LAN equipment and do not need to add extra hardware, the client can also locate the user's location estimate just by installed a software. The system is useful with the simple calculation process and easy implementation of high practical value.
