The successful application and development of millimeter-wave solid-state system are greatly determined by the system output power. But the limited output power of a single solid-state power device is the bottleneck of millimeter-wave systems, which can be conquered by an effective method: the power combination technique. In this paper, 8mm wave band power combination technique is researched deeply. The detailed work includes:(1) We use the methods of waveguide directional coupler and double probe transition in E plane as a low loss power distribution/combination network in the millimeter-wave power-combining amplifier. The proposed combining structure is optimized by using 3-D fields simulation tools CST Microwave Studio. In 29.0GHz ~30.5GHz, the power-combining amplifier provides a maximum of 7.21W(38.58dBm)output power when it is driven into saturation. The maximum combining-efficiency is 72.1%.(2) A waveguide-to-microstrip antipodal finline transition is designed and used in the power-driver at Ka-band. In 29.0GHz ~30.5GHz, the driver amplifier provides a minimum of 31.92dBm and a maximum of 33.95dBm output power when it is driven into saturation.
