The monitoring system is often used for surveillance in areas which need security, such as banks, markets, crossroads, airports, residential quarters or where the environment is not comfortable for humans. With the vigorous development of economy and the rising of living standards, the monitoring system has been used in more and more areas. However, the analogue video surveillance system has been difficult to meet the security needs of the people because it has some shortcomings: the distance which this kind of system can monitor is short, the room space which this kind of system will occupy is large. It's possible to use remote monitoring system based on IP net with the rapid technical development of IP net and the digital vide. As compared with the analogue video surveillance system, IP net monitoring system has many advantages: remote monitoring distance, small memory space and low monitoring cost. Since the IP net monitoring system has good prospects, the research and design of a remote monitoring system based on IP net has great value. IP net monitoring system which is designed by independent research can rise the ratio of performance to price greatly, this is the cause why I write this paper.The paper is about the design of the IP net monitoring system, there are detailed research and analysis of some technology involved in it. The main results are as follows:1. Embedded real time system technology, especially the structure, princIPle, API and the Tornado platform of the VxWorks developed by WindRiver.2. Internet communication technology, especially the demands and features of real time communication of streaming media. By API of Berkeley socket on VxWorks, Linux and Windows, the system can communicate in internet easily. The paper also research and implement the RTP(Real - Time Transport Protocol), RTCP(Real-time Transport Control Protocol), in order to communicate multimedia data in the internet according to the demand of the streaming media.3. The analysis of the functions, features and applicable fields of different video decode and encode technologies. The analysis of video encode standards made by ITU (International Telecommunication Union), M-JPEG(Motion-Join Photographic Experts Group) and MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) and the comparison of different solutions about these standards made by some famous chIP companies.4. The streaming media technology on the Windows. With the DirectShow on the basis of COM(Component Object Model) made by Microsoft, it's easy to handle and render the multimedia data on the Windows.
