PHS (Personal Handy-phone System), a kind of wireless telecommunication technology, is the extension and supplement of the fixed telephone. PHS utilizes the micro cell and the TDMA technology, and uses the TDD and 32kADPCM as the speech code. It has many advantages such as lower transmitting power, lower power consumption, and longer talk time and standby time compared with mobile phone. However, there are no uniform specifications for the PHS network, which bring in the difficulty of connecting the different companies' systems. The air interfaces of PHS have not adopted the technologies of channel coding, interleaving and power control, which results the poor ability of anti-fading. The factors of imperfect mobility management system and low transmitting power cause the small coverage area, that results many problems, e.g. call break, mute speaker, more dead zone and over frequently handover. Now the PHS technology has brought in the new techniques, namely, the group control, smart antenna, 500mW large power station and station amplifier etc. The application and development of new technologies, and the networking renovation has remarkably improved the network performance and capacity.With development of PHS, the service type is diversifying. Now the PHS network not only provides the traditional services such as the Voice Service, Call Transfer, Caller Identification Display, and Prepaid Service, but also offer the new VAS (Value Added Service), for example, the SMS, Locating Service, Online Service, Call in Dead Zone, Double ringing and Music Ring Tone service. Furthermore, the varieties and functions of terminals are also increasing, such as the PHS wireless public phone, PHS/GSM Bi-mode mobile phone. PHS network in China is largest one all the world. The PHS service has made the fixed network operators such as Chine Telecom and Chine Netcom more competitive in the market, and it became an important means to increase the profit. Consequently, to improve the PHS network quality and facilitate the wireless local call service, it became very necessary to optimize the PHS network.The PHS network of Bazhong Telecom adopts the ZTE ZXPCS10.0 system with the capacity of 60,000 subscribers, and single-mode networking. The main equipment comprises 1 set of IGW, 3 pieces of ANU, 2 pieces of ICSC and 732 stations in all. It covers the following areas: Bazhong urban area, Pingchang urban area, Jiangtong urban area, Nanjing urban area and some villages and towns.To meet the increasing requirements for communication quality of PHS subscribers in Bazhong area, PHS network must be optimized in 2007. In this way, we can evaluate the actual quality of the network and initially find the problems in network. According to the actual situation of current network, we shall conduct the quality analysis of the whole network, exchanger status analysis and the wireless function analysis, in order to determine the main network optimization work, and propose the detailed wireless network optimization plan and implementation. After theoptimization is completed, continue to test the network so that to constantly improve the sensitive quality of PHS subscriber and support the services development in market After the implementation of the PHS network optimization, we shall conduct the onsite test of the PHS subscriber sensitive index and compare the result with that of GSM network, with the purpose of comprehensively evaluating the network in the view of subscribers and improving the PHS subscriber satisfaction. From this work, we shall also know the gap between the PHS service provided by China Telecom and the GSM service provided by China Mobile, so that we can constantly push the further optimization of PHS network following the idea of accurate coverage and classified maintenance.
