The paper introduces design and implementation of a high performance virtual I/O model for Itanium. This subject strongly makes sense to virtualization technology and virtual I/O technology.Virtual technology is one of the most popular and cutting-edge technologies of computer science in recent years. Since the first virtualization production launched by VMware corporation in 1998, virtualization technology has been widely used in most aspects of computer field, such as data center, virtual server, OS isolation, application isolation, antivirus software and so on. XEN is the most successful virtual machine subject in open source community, supported by Intel, IBM, HP, Fujitsu, Bull, AMD and many other companies. Virtual I/O technology, as one of core components of virtualization technology, has been no significant development since device emulator virtual I/O model and Para-virtualization device driver virtual I/O model are introduced. Now, VT-d launched by Intel is coming, it begins to change the situation. This technology promotes virtualization research institutions and companies to investigate into new virtual I/O model. VT-d is accepted by PCI SIG as a standard of next version PCI specification. The implementation in this paper can be used for reference by the later design of OS and Virtual machine of Itanium.Virtualization technology and the famous virtualization projects are introduced in this paper firstly. Secondly, the principle and implementation of currently popular virtual I/O models are discussed, and a simple analysis of their advantages and disadvantages is done. Then based on feaures of Itanium and the implementation of XEN, we design a high performance virtual I/O model with Intel's VT-d and implement it on Itanium platform. Through our testing, the model gains an outstanding performance which satisfies the high I/O performance requests from server machine entironment.Now, this virtual I/O model is successfully accepted by XEN community, and gained wide acclaim.
