With the development of communication network technologies, Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN) need to evolve into broadband networks. This evolutionary process demonstrates the requirement of the integration of voice and data networks. The integration of voice and data networks is creating an essential change in the telecommunication and data communication industries. This change means better phone services, lower prices, new features, less maintenance, and more choices, and can make data communications and telecommunications to converge into a continuum. An ATM network is a communication network which employs ATM switching technology. This network is required to integrate voice services and data services. In this paper, we have researched how to integrate voice and data services in ATM networks. This paper is organized as follows:1. Overview of Integrating Voice and Data Networks (IVDN);The concept of IVDN is introduced as well as its advantage and evolution.2. Theory of ATM technology; The theory, the characteristics and the architecture of ATM are reviewed. The ATM Application Layer (AAL) technology is also presented.3. Analysis of the voice switching scheme over ATM;Several voice switching schemes over ATM are analyzed and compared with each other, and the best one is selected.4. Implementation of the voice switching scheme. The implementation of the voice switching scheme is presented in detail.
