Grid computing has been regarded as the third wave following the Internet andWeb. It is one of the important areas of the research and application of the NextGeneration Internet technology. Grid computing focuses on building virtualorganizations dynamically in distributed, heterogeneous, autonomous networkenvironment, and achieving cross-organizational resource sharing and collaborativework. Sharing and collaboration are the basic philosophy of Grid.CSCL (Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning) is a learning style usingcomputer technology, especially multimedia and network technology, to complementand support collaborative learning. At present CSCL has become a hot in educationalresearch field. Collaborative learning technology requires the sharing and reuse oflearning resources to support collaborative working while Grid computing sharesresources and solves problem collaboratively in dynamic virtual organizations. Bothhave the same goal—sharing and collaboration. Therefore, Grid computing bringsnew opportunities for the research and development of CSCL.This paper firstly introduces the basic concepts, characteristics and researchstatus of CSCL and Grid computing, and discusses the possibility and necessity ofcombining Grid with CSCL. The main research and innovation are as follow:Firstly, this paper analyzes the development status and trends of CSCL, andsummarizes two focuses of current research: effective resource managementmechanism and efficient task scheduling mechanism.Secondly, we study several typical Grid resource management models, in view ofthe characteristics of CSCL resources, present a CSCL resource management modelbased-on Grid. The model uses hierarchical structure and economic managementmodel.Thirdly, this paper proposes an economic resource scheduling algorithmbased-on credit, introducing credit model to improve the quality of services, takinginto account the users' QoS requirements, such as deadlines, budget. Finally, the GridSim toolkit is used to emulate the algorithm. The experimentresults show that introducing credit into grid resource management system is feasible. It improves the system throughput and resource utilization.
