Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a powerful remote sensing technique thatallows the generation of high resolution images, independently of weather conditionand sun illumination. The SAR technique develops fast and the systems are more andmore complex. In the process of system designing and analyzing, using the computersoftware can significantly reduce the calculation work load of researchers and makethem focus on system evaluating and decision-making. Meanwhile, SAR raw signalsimulation is a useful method for validating the system parameters. In this paper, thedesign of SAR system parameters and the simulation of SAR raw signal areresearched.On the basis of analyzing the restriction of SAR parameters and the model ofSAR raw signal, a set of SAR system design software is developed with MATLAB. Itis easy to operate, and also shows plenty of figures to make the process of designvisible. A raw signal simulation method is brought forth and is proved to have goodresult via simulations. Then, the paper researches on the influence of atmosphereprecipitation particles on SAR performance, and puts forward the method ofconsidering performance influence due to cloud and rain in different conditions.Meanwhile, it also discusses the performance of SAR when detecting precipitationparticles, such as rain and cloud.In general, the contribution of the paper can be concluded as follows:1) The paper summarizes the flow of SAR system parameters design process,and accomplishes a set of software for system design. The software canshow plenty of figures to make the design process more visible.Man-machine conversation when choosing Pulse Repetition Frequency (PRF)makes it easy for designers to evaluate parameters.2) A simulation method of SAR raw signal based on real scenes is researched.The results of simulation show that the method is simple and effective. 3) On the consideration of SAR working environment, the paper researches onthe attenuation and scattering characters of atmosphere precipitationparticles, such as rain and cloud. The influence on SAR performance due torain and cloud is discussed. The calculation results show how rain and cloudaffects the performance and how to consider the effects in system design.4) The SAR radar equation detecting rain and cloud is studied and thepossibilities of using SAR for rain and cloud measurement under differentconditions are discussed.
