Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become a very hot research topic since their potential applications are very broad. Interesting research on WSNs includes routing, topology control, localization, time synchronization, security, data management, data aggregation, hardware, operation system and so on. Security schemes in WSNs fall into two categories, namely, intrusion detection and key management. Providing confidentiality and security for data are the basic requirements for security schemes and also the goal of key management schemes. Thus key management becomes the basic problem of security in WSNs, and the topic of this thesis.A key management protocol named PLA is proposed in this thesis based on transitory initial key to solve the security problems in pairwise communications, local broadcast communications and authentication of the newly joined sensor nodes in WSNs. When deploying a wireless sensor network, each node is assigned a unique identifier and a transitory initial key. Each node computes a pairwise key, a local broadcast key and an authentication key based on the transitory initial key and some related information. Theoretical analysis shows that the PLA protocol is more secure and more energy efficient than existing protocols such as LEAP and OTMK.The design of PLA combines multiple techniques, such as data aggregation and topology control. This design style accords with the need of WSNs, and is the trend in future research.
