Wireless LAN(WLAN) has been extensively deployed in commercial, scientific and home applications due to the availability of low-cost wireless Network Interace Cards(NICs) based on the IEEE802.11 standard. While the IEEE 802.11 standard supports client mobility, it was originally devised to replicate in a wireless fashion the structures of the wired Local Area Networks(LANs). Only recently the idea of utilizing IEEE 802.11 technology for high mobility scenarios has been taken into account and the range of WLAN based applications has been enriched. The research of this paper is to study experimentally the behavior of an IEEE 802.11 wireless network when the nodes are characterized by mobility and to understanding of the survivability and the performance of a connection under various aggressive mobility conditions.Firstly, a full description of the system and protocol stack of IEEE 802.11 WLAN is presented as well as the main function of 802.11 MAC layer and 802.11 PHY layer, theoretically analyzes the feasibilities of broadband access for the fast moving applications. Then an IEEE 802.11 PHY simulation has been carried on according to the analysis of wireless local area network technology to analyze the performance of 802.11 quantitatively in various mobile scenarios under different conditions, e.g., LOS VS. NLOS, multi-path propagation, moving speed and SNR, as well as the dynamic relations between the signal-to-noise ratio and the modulation. Finally we set up a testbed and perform a series of experiment study on the capability of broadband access for the fast moving applications using UDP/TCP's conventional application.
