Computing resources on the Internet are often independently developed and managed and they are autonomous. Due to open and dynamic characteristics of the Internet itself, autonomous computing resources on the Internet should interconnect, cooperate and ally with one another to achieve goals or perform tasks. Software on the Internet can be viewed as a task-specific coalition dynamically formed of loosely coupled autonomous computing resources, which results in the appearance of a new software paradigm, i.e., Internetware. Different from traditional software paradigm developed under the static and closed environment, cooperation is crucial to Internetware.Cooperation among internetware is characterized as true distribution, without global planning and non-compelling. For traditional components, though the interoperability among components has made great progress, the autonomy of component is not supported sufficiently. For agents, though agents are autonomous, they are often assumed to be equipped with powerful capabilities and there is even not an implementation for real complex applications. Neither traditional component nor agent can be used to handle cooperation among internetware.Based on the traditional component technology and via referencing the research on the autonomy of agent, this paper introduces the concept of autonomous component to model autonomous computing entities, proposes and initially implements an autonomous component-based cooperation framework. In the framework, autonomous components interact and cooperate through the public environments. Under the cooperation, autonomous components will behave in a cooperative way and can eventually achieve the cooperative goal even though there is neither direct intervention on individual behavior nor compelling on individual participation.
