Museums, a symbol of the progress of social civilization, is the collecting place of witnessing human beings' civilization, which takes upon the important responsibility for the social development. Today, a time when material and spiritual civilization have been highly advancing, wider concerns have been shown over museums' missions and duties. China's museums, which initially learned from the western museums, have developed into an enormous and complete system with a few thousand museums, several ten thousand working staff and scientific institutions. The development, to greater extent, reflects both the improvement of related research into China's museum science and social prosperity and progress. Different from those in other countries, China's museums are largely state-owned museums, more than seventy of which are comprehensive province-level museums. Most of them were established in the 1950s. Under the long influence of Planned Economy, the management systems are basically similar and have gone through similar process. Nowadays, the current problems and difficult situations under the influence of Market Economy are basically the same. The province-level museums are the kernel power of China's museums and the targets of being propped up focally by the Nation. Therefore, it is of great significance to study province-level museums under the new situation in which museums are facing important social reforms.Hebei Provincial Museum was built in 1952. It, through its fifty years' development, has become the miniature of China's museums. Meanwhile, Hebei Provincial Museum has the universal quality in terms of the role in socialist construction and today's difficult situations encountered by all the museums in China. As a result, taking Hebei Provincial Museum as a target for study, this thesis is intended to present the existing problems in managing museums by doing preliminary research on Hebei Provincial Museum, clarifying the historical development of museums and making detailed analysis, contrast and induction on the museum pieces, displaying approaches by way of empirical study, interviews, analysis and induction, comparison, statistics, mass development and concerning education. Based on the above research, this paper draws a conclusion that major factors that influence the management of museums are the purpose of running museums, people who are involved in the museum management and funds. This thesis originally puts forward the purpose of managing museums in guiding museums' management and its significance for the development of museums. This paper insists that new institutions shall be added and their functions be brought into full play; display exhibition shall be clearly programmed and enough preparations for related education be made beforehand. Finally, some preliminary reforming suppositions are suggested in this thesis on the management of Hebei Museum. It is hoped that this study can offer a theoretically useful reference for the research into China's museum science and for the development of province-level museums and a practical basis for governmental bodies to make new policies in terms of management of museums.
