Optical modulator is the key device of optical telecommunication and optical data network. Recent years, with the development of high-bandwidth fiber-optical communication systems, requirements for high-speed optical modulator have been increased. Typical optical modulators are electrooptic modulators which used electrooptic effects and acousto-optic modulators which used acousto-optic effects. Disadvantage of electrooptic modulators and acousto-optic modulators is high absorbing and narrow bandwidth respectively. Lack of good magnetooptical material, magnetooptical modulators are seldom researched. With appearance of new magnetooptical material, magnetooptical madulators have been researched extensively.Firstly, development and concrecte application of magnetooptical garnet has been introduced. Then, YIG and its element replacement is introduced. Ce:YIG has advan- tages of large Faraday rotaton, small temperature, cheap material etc and is a exerlent material for waveguide devices.The foundamental principle of FD_BPM (Finite-Difference Beam Propagation Method) has been used to simulate and calculate the process of beam propagation in magnetooptical waveguide.Thory research of waveguide magnetooptic madulator about mode conversion has been done. Formule of mode conversion efficency of magnetooptic madulator has been infer. There are two kinds of methods which can increase mode conversion efficency: use material with large Faraday rotation; eliminating phase mismatch. Waveguide magnetooptic modulator on silicon which used for integration optics has been designed. Integration waveguide polarimeter for the modulator also has been designed. 48% conversion efficency of the modulator has been obtained. Ce:YIG film has been pre- pared by RF sputter.
