The applications of the computer visual and the image processing technique on vehicle driver assistance systems can make driving safer. At present, by using visual information perception environment, the researches on determining the distance information of the loading camera object and the goal from a single 2-dimention image in computer vision, is one of the most important technologies of the intelligent traffic system and the intelligent vehicle system.Mainly, this paper studies the monocular visual measurement distance method of range, aims at ITS and IVS. The monocular visual-based measurement technique is one kind of novel non-contact measurement technique, which developed from the computer vision realm, primarily integrated the image processing technique and regards images as the carrier and means to detect or transfer the information.By using the principle of projection geometry and the method of image processing that monocular visual measurement distance algorithm, the paper studied the camera calibration technique, image preprocessing method, obstacle detection and calculates the algorithm.This paper adopted a kind of new method, in the absence of the interior and exterior parameters of camera, its principle is based on using the parallel line in perspective image form eliminate dot that have the relation of geometric constraint to realize camera calibration. In contrast to conventional approach, this method is simple in computing, however, is more robust and exact. Using this method do not need to calibrate camera before using. So it accords with the reality closely(the focal length of camera change randomly today),and therefore it has very important value in application.Secondly, analyze, compare and select for various image processing algorithm, the algorithm of adopting have considered both image processing effect and the requirement of real time.Furthermore, road geometry model has established on the foundation of analysis of road feature, and use a Hough of improvement to draw road edge curve model. Progresshave been made on the existing foundation of the unitary road model measurement distance algorithm, mixes geometry model have been developed on the monocular visual measurement distance algorithm. Test results showing this algorithm for the visual ranging have certain reference meaning.
