H.264/AVC video coding standard is provided formally by JVT(Joint Video Team) in March 2003. The new standard is designed to give a new technicial solution to a broad range of applications,such as low-bit-rate conversational services and entertainment quality broadcast,interactive video-on-demand services etc.So this standard obtains much attention from academic and industrial fields.Compare with prior standards,H.264 has achieved great efficiency in compression of video,but also has brought a lot of computational complexity. Therefor, reducing computational complexity and improving coding rate became very important for real-time application.Firstly,the key tools of H.264/AVC are discussed,such as intra/inter prediction, integer transform and quantization,entropy coding , rate control , error concealment. We give a detailed analysis about the innovations and the research actuality of the mentioned above,sequentially advance the future about H.264/AVC.Secondly, we give a detailed analysis about the arithmetics of fast intra prediction, and propose an idea making use of breviary map. The results show that the new arithmetic can reduce the coding time for amount of 50% while the rate and PSNR change little.Lastly, the mechanism and performance of DM642 is described, we focus on the implementation and optimization of the smallest H.264 encoder based on DM642 DSP.
