This paper investigate the principles of Inverse Multiplexing for ATM (IMA), IMA is a technology that several slow speed physical links transfer a high speed ATM cell stream at the transmission end, and the high speed ATM cell stream are recovered by multiplexing of physical links at the receiving end. The essence is that several slow speed links are bound together to form a high speed link for solving the problem of big bandwidth signal are transfered on the small .bandwidth links.Firstly, this paper discussed the protocals of IMA and its dynamical bandwidth change function in detail, and introduced the application on the aera of wired/wireless communication.Secondly, this paper discussed the background knowledge: the principles of ATM and WATM over E1.Thirdly, this paper bring up a scheme about the software and hardware design and its implementation of wired/wireless IMA module. After the structure and function of IMA module are introduced, the signal transmission process are explained. Then, this paper introduced the structure and the function and the interface timing of PM7340, DS21Q59 and the CPU in detail. As the core of this module, FPGA played an important role, so its design are explained in detail. Finally, the test scheme of wired/wireless IMA module are given, including the test scheme of inverse multiplexing function and the dynamical bandwidth change function. The test data and its analyse are supplied to confirm functional integrity and validity.
