Phase retarders are important optical information modulating components that introduce a phase shift between orthogonal and linearly polarized components of light transmitted through them. Fitted with other polarimetric elements, they can realize modifying of light and controlling of polarization states, and it has direct connection with optical wavelengh. Achromatic retarder is difficult to reach the high precision because of the width of spectrum. Modern polarization technology and optical modulation demand high precision not only for single wavelength but also for compounded wave-plate and achromatic retarder. It has been solved for the former, but it has some gap for the latter in precision. So it is necessary to design the new achromatic retarder with small retardation error. So we process in-depth discussion and analysis.First sura Introduction. We principally discuss application extension and designing format of retarders, and do simple introduction to research actuality of homeland and fremdness.Second sura Total internal reflection phase transformation theory. By Fresnel formula ,we gain total internal reflection phase transformation formula, and it is theory according as to design total internal reflection achromatic phase retarders. Through discussing internal reflection phase transformation formula, we educe relation between phase delayδand angle of total reflectionθ,phase delayδand medium refractive index n ,and it establish base to design retarders.Third sura Total internal reflection achromatic phase retarders. First, we analyse ecumenic thromb chromatic phase retarders: Fresnel rhomb, Mooney rhomb, AD-1 chromatic phase retarders, AD-2 chromatic phase retarders; Second, we introduct oblique incidence; Finally, we introduct a few oblique incidence achromatic phase retarders: rhomb-type phase retarders(mostly presentation),rectangular parallelepiped type phase retarders(mostly presentation),trapezoid phase retarders.Fourth sura Mending design of total internal reflection achromatic phase retarders. Depending on upwards theory, we design a new achromatic phase retarders, and we mostly turn uprightness incidence into oblique incidence. When parameters of retardersαis 14,5°andθis 66.5°, phase delay of incidence light is 89°-91°within the range of 530 nm to 1000 nm through retarders. Changing 1°of incidence light, phase has a change of 0.0006°-0.45°,and retarders are insensitive to change of incidence light, even lack change at some wavelengh, and phase delay of incidence light is 89°-91°within the range of 540 nm to 900 nm through retarders. Comparing AD - 2 achromatic phase retarders, sensitivity to incidence angle falls enormously.Innovation labor of article:(1) we have systemic analysis to designing methods of rhomb-type phase retarders and rectangular parallelepiped type phase retarders. We have general designing advisement to retarders from aperture of retarders, achromatism, sensitivity to incidence angle, sensitivity to structure angle. We design a retarder using above theory, the retardation error is smaller than 0.04°within the range of 350 nm to 2000 nm, and it is insensitive to incidence angle.(2) Designing a new structure retarder. New retarder not only reserve excellence of AD-2 retarders that through retarders incidence light lack deflection or remove, but also sensitivity to incidence angle falls enormously.
