With the fast development of the network technology, Multimedia communication, such as IP TV, Video conference, multimedia remote education etc, is becoming the hotspot of the application. The research of Multimedia conference includes: the Multimedia conference system research based on hardware and the Multimedia conference system research based on software. The principle of system based on software is nearly the same as based on hardware, the difference between them is that MCU and end system are both realized by the high performance PC and server related software. However, with the rise of computer capability, network bandwidth and reliability, the latter can completely utilize software to fulfill the function of hardware, not only have a good scalability but also have a cheap prize, which is becoming the main trend of future conference design.IPv6 has the new characteristics of more efficiency header,enhanced router forward mechanism, new added flow label etc, which supplies more support and improve in real-time multimedia communication than IPv4. Multicast is the key technology used for multimedia communication, but IPv4 adopts optional support, so it is difficult to be popular for the conference system based on IPv4, while employing relevant replaceable technology will result in developing superiority of multicast not abundantly.IPv6 protocol is necessary to multicast support, because host and router within the IPv6 network both support multicast, conference based on IPv6 multicast will improve the function of communication because of compromise design resulted from IPv4 limited multicast support.The paper focuses on the relevant researches of IPv6 multimedia communication technology of multimedia conference system based on IPv6 multicast. Beginning with the three aspects, that is: signaling control protocol, multimedia communication standard, network protocol, the paper puts forward prototype construction of scalable architecture conference system suitable for IPv6 multicast, proposes idea of control layer. Paper also discuss multicast communication technology base on IPv6 flow label completely, combining with SIP, it fulfills the system prototype. Finally, the system works under the IPv6 test network to have a test of MPEG-4 video communication, and has good performance of communication result.
