Internet is everywhere today. It is not enough to store information only in local computer systems, because information is exploding, but the local system is limited on storage and sharing mechanism. More and more SPs provide internet based storage services. To transfer information from local system to the network is one of the most important services that the Internet provides. But how will be the service quality when millions of users are using the service at the same time? It is clear that a big technical problem must be resolved in order to provide acceptable service quality to such a big user group. This paper researches and implements an internet based distributed file storage and sharing platform, which is called the Grid FSSP (Grid based File Storage and Sharing Platform). The purpose is to build a sound foundation for digital media transformation. Grid FSSP is built upon OGSA, the Open Grid Service Architecture, using the OGSA's resource management mechanism to solve the service binding, resource management and other issues. The paper started by introducing the basic concepts of Grid and the architecture of Globus Toolkit. Then, the structure of Grid FSSP was proposed, along with the details of each component respectively. When introducing the structure, the paper also discussed the usability, scalability and potential bottlenecks of each component, and gave some resolutions to potential performance problems. The paper also explores the interactions among the various components, focusing on how OGSA architecture matches the storage system model. The paper then introduces some key technical points in implementing the platform. These include: component interface, file transfer processes, system resource management, universal file name, etc. Finally, in order to provide better service quality under a high volume of concurrent connectivity, the paper tried to improve I/O performance further, and built an http server using new IO technology provided by JDK1.4.
