Computer science changing with each passing day has motivated the development of geographic information system greatly and brought an infinitude of energy. With the rapid development of micro-electronic and photo electronic technologies, we are on the verge of a new computing paradigm. Mobile computing systems based on personal digital assistant (PDA) products has been used widely. It is no longer Arabian nights for mobile users to operate computers when moving, connect to the network anytime and anywhere in different ways and combine themselves with immense digital space seamlessly.The purpose of the paper is to develop a spatial information visualization system based on GPSONE and PDA. The system integrates the mobile computing technology and mobile map technology and has satisfied the visualization, query and analysis of spatial information. Besides it is more important that on one hand the system is mobile and enables users to enjoy Location-based Service anytime and anywhere, on the other hand users can customize information at will so as to meet the requirements in different professional fields.The research of the paper involves computer science, such as mobile computing, embedded developing, computer graphics and wireless networks, and the science of surveying and mapping, such as the principle and data organization methods of geographic information system, the visualization of digital maps, location and navigation based global positioning system and the technology of "3S" integration.First, the paper analyses the development of global positioning system and the technical background, characteristics and application of GPSONE, providing the technical foundation for the development of personal navigation system. Second, it outlines the status quo, technical background, characteristics and application of embedded Geographic information system. Third, it sets up the whole logical frame, principles for function implementation and provides application solutions for personal navigation system. The focus is laid on the analysis of data model, logical structure and physical organization of embedded multi-scale digital map. Finally, the paper summarizes the factors that should be considered in the period of embedded development and gives a practical instance—"Pocket Map 1.0", and pictures the prospect of mobile map.
