The application range of liquid crystal displays(LCDs) has been greatly extended from small size ones for use in mobile phones to large size ones for use in monitors and LC televisions. LCDs is dominant in flat panel displays due to their simple structure, light weight and low electric power consumption. However, LCDs also have some weakness, such as a narrow viewing angle, slow response speed, and high manufacture cost.In this paper we demonstrated electro-optical (EO) characteristics of amorphous hybrid twisted nematic mode (A-HTN mode) that has promise of possibly improving not only the viewing angle, but also manufacturing process, and reducing the manufacturing expenses. The director arrangement of the liquid crystal molecules in the cell is twisted. The director at the upper-substrate surface is set parallel to the optical axis of the polarizer and the director at the lower-substrate surface is set vertical to the substrate and the optical axis of the analyzer. A small amount of chiral dopant is mixed with the host nematic liquid crystal. In the absence of an electric field, the cell appears to be white.Difference iterative method is used to estimate numerically director configurations in the A-HTN mode LC cell in this paper. According to the liquid crystal director configurations, the EO characteristic of LC cell for tilted incident light can be accurately calculated. An extended Jones matrix method which is a powerful tool to treat the transmission of light through LC cell, then this method is applied to investigated the A-HTN mode LC cell in this paper.The dependence of EO effect on different cell conditions is investigated. The optimized parameters of the A-HTN mode LC cell are achieved basing on extended Jones matrix method and difference iterative method.The A-HTN mode LC cell which is presented in this paper exhibits symmetric viewing angle and simple manufacturing process.
