With the development of The Technology in Hard Disk Drive (HDD), The Microdrive has been widely used in the portable computer and other digital products. For the Microdrive, the request of the positioning accuracy is far rigorous than that of the traditional HDDs. This makes a special request on the vibration performance of the elastic arm in Microdrive. In this thesis, the author combined the theory analysis and the Finite Elements analysis to study the vibration performance of the elastic arm. Found the natural frequencies and the modal shapes of the elastic arm of 1 inch HDD around the working frequencies. Based on this, the theoretic modeling and Finite Elements analysis are used to analyze the elastic arm. An orientation of optimize the elastic arm is promoted.Firstly, the author analyzed the structure and operation principles of the HDD, obtained the working conditions of the elastic arm. Then, the simplified 3-D model of the elastic arm is built with Solidworks 2005. Import the 3-D model to ANSYS software. After meshed the model, the Finite Element model is built. Make a structural analysis to the Finite Element model, the author found the frequencies of the elastic arm in Microdrive. And the natural frequencies that are around the working frequencies and the modal shapes of the elastic arm are analyzed.Secondly, the author makes a theoretic analysis to the cantilever. Through Newton's Law of Motion, the continuous model of the cantilever is built. The author discretizes the model through lumped mass method and supposed modal method, analyzes the discretized model through influence coefficients method. Compare the results of the two models; the general analysis method of non-uniform beams is obtained.Then the author gives emphasis to the analysis of the elastic arm in Microdrive, builds the simplified continuous model, analyzes the model with vibration theory. The natural frequencies and modal shapes are deduced. The author builds discretized models of a few structures of the elastic arm, simulates the influences of the structure with ANSYS software. The influence of these structures to the whole is analyzed.
