UnifiedPOS is an international architectural specification for application interfaces to point-of-service devices that are used in the retail environment .It specifies all of POS device uniformly and is independent from operating system and language in the meanwhile. UnifiedPOS has two existing implementations at present: OPOS which is based on OLE and JavaPOS which is based on Java. OPOS can only run on Microsoft System, which make it not only limit on platform but require to pay expensive royalty. This limits its development. In 1997, Sun Microsystem Inc. established the JavaPOS standards. JavaPOS standards committee was formed by a collection of retail vendors and end users, with a primary goal of providing device interfaces for the retail applications written in Java. It can run on any operating system which the Java virtual machine can be migrated to. The benefits of JavaPOS include:The opportunity for reduced POS terminal costs, through the use of the thinner clients.Platform-independent applications, where the application is separated from both hardware and operating system specifics.Reduced administration costs, because an application and supporting software may be maintained on a server and loaded on demand by Java.Shorten developing cycle and the time of coming into the market, because the application on the top is written in Java, the applications and the drivers can be developed at the same time and the applications must not be changed when the operating system and the hardwares change. At present, JavaPOS has been widely used in the Occident and Japan. Most of the POS terminals of IBM conform to JavaPOS standards and most of retail device vendors provide the device drivers of POS devices based on JavaPOS. For the moment, JavaPOS hasn't been used in our country, so we designed and implemented the software library of JavaPOS. It is an open and universial software library facing to embedded...
