The RPSW/A pendulum instrumented charpy impact testing machine was imported to Panzhihua Iron&Steel Research Institute of PanGang Group from SCHENCK corp. of West Germany in 1986. Because of the severe non-restoring trouble in the testing system computer, the machine's charpy impact function was paralyzed. Some scientific research items requiring instrumented charpy impact test had to carry out through entrusting. This spent much charge and long period and effected scientific research test develop. The equipment was a product of last century 80 ages and the computer was washed out. To restore the machine, we had ever contacted several test machine manufacturer, but no one come true because of various reasons. In that case, a conceit was brought up to modify the test machine by ourselves. We analyzed its principle and existent problems by making careful examination to the transducer, signal disposal circuit, mainframe, hammer control circuit, testing system etc.. And then, on the foundation of fully understanding the actuality and the latest technology of the instrumented charpy impact testing machine, we had the testing system hardware being replaced by high-speed multifunction PCI data acquisition card, approach transducer and standard PC. Using advanced computer technology, data acquisition and software data processing technology, via reiterative experiment, strict test and instrument calibration, a data acquisition and processing system was developed base on the Windows operating system. The RPSW/A pendulum instrumented charpy impact testing machine was successfully restored, the mechanics test work could be favourably accomplished. After modifying, the test machine could dynamically draw curve from specimen cracking, expanding to rupturing, at the same time, recorded the eigenvalues of the load, energy and displacement etc.. Via a series of contrast experiments, the machine's main parameters accorded to the international standard of ISO 14556 : 2000(E)"Steel-charpy V-notch impact test — Instrumented test method". The machine functions were all restored after modifying and satisfied current need for scientific research and producing. It had developed out important effect in some research subject. Comparingwith the old testing system, it had much excellence in fault rate, functions, accuracy, reliability, operation and maintenance etc..The article introduced the basic construction and principle of the RPSW/A pendulum instrumented charpy impact testing machine systematically. By analyzing the data acquisition principle, some questions need considering were brought up in selecting type to data acquisition card. This paper also studied the software design process of data acquisition and processing system, including man-machine interface designing, mathematics model establishing, test data acquisition and processing, curves drawing, instrument calibrating etc.. The actual usage results proved the methods and techniques using in the system software were feasible.
