Fusion of infrared and low-level-light image becomes more and more popular in the field of night vision. Thermal infrared(IR) sensors can provide high contrast image and be operated normally in all weather while the infrared image has low resolution, low-level-light image has high resolution and quality while it is easily influenced by the environment. If we fusion these two kinds of image with some methods, we can improve the observation ability of the night vision system greatly. The dissertation open up deeply study with the task"hardware design of infrared and low-level-light image fusion system". By studying the origin of infrared and low-level-lignt , contrasting their characters, summarizing common image fusion algorithmic approaches, Weighted pixel averaging has been selected as the guidance of system hardware design. According to this algorithmic approach , the real-time processing system of infrared and low-level-light image fusion using Altera FPGA EP1C20 and TI DSP TMS320VC33 has been designed. The paper also provides the experiment result of the image fusion. At the end, tests of edge detecting algorithmic approaches using TMS320c6416 have been done , for the purpose of improving system using C64x DSP in future.
