The wavelet transform is the latest time-domain techniques that priors to traditional methods. Wavelet transform allows a signal to be decomposed such that frequency characteristics and the location of particular features in a time series may be highlighted simultaneously. So any particular part of the signal can be located for analyzing. This made the wavelet transform to be widely used in the seismic data compression processing area. The paper mainly studies the application of using wavelet transform in the processing of seismic data compression. The major research work and contributions of this dissertation are as follows:(1) To satisfy the need of fact, and According to the character of seismic data and idiographic seismic data, first we researched the methods of seismic data procession.then we processed the seismic data of some place.(2) In order to compress seismic data, We design a new fomat SPF-SEG Y for seismic data compression. The experiment indicates that the new format can meet the need of seismic data compression.(3) According to the character of seismic data and idiographic seismic data, we researched 2D seismic data. In the process of WT—Quantization—Coding, we analyzed the characteristics of wavelet transform coefficients of seismic data, and the effects of different wavelets and different transform levels on compression performance. We choose SPIHT to quantize and code on a basis of EZW and SPIHT.The result indicates SPIHT can meet the need of the seismic data compression .
