With the rapid development of the network technology, Internet-based multimedia communication is becoming increasing important. Because VOIP, that is IP network telephone, technology uses IP packet switching network as a transport platform, can get the goal of real-time communicating by voice and video between computer and computer, telephone and computer, or even telephone and telephone, provide relevant value-added services, cut the operating cost, it has became one of the most fast-developed, rapid-prevalent popular hot technologies. The dissertation summarizes the research gains from a project of the microelectronics Institute of Chinese Academy of science. The writer has joined the project since June of 2004. The goal of the project is to implement a VOIP terminal system based on controller and CoStar by using SIP protocol, MPEG-2 protocol, G.726 protocol and so on. The CoStar is a high-performance, low power embeded fixed parallel DSP and the integrate circuit and SOC Lab of microelectronics Institute has its copyright. At present, the terminal system can receive and play the specific voice and video format by following the SIP response handle process. The thesis is organized as follow:In the first chapter, the research background, significance and feature of the project are referred briefly. Moreover, the development history, present status and future are also introduced briefly. In the second chapter, the signalling protocols are introduced in detail. The content of RFC 3261(Session Initiation Protocol: SIP) is emphasized. The SIP protocol and H.323 protocol are also compared completely in this chapter in order to show the advantage of the former over IP network. In the third chapter, the most popular voice and video compress coding standards are discussed. The process flows of the G.723 and MPEG-2 algorithm are depicted in detail respectively.
