At present, it is necessary to found WDM optical communication networks. And it is considered a practicable and best-prospected scheme to found a best flexible and survivable optical network, based on wavelength route inducing OADM and OXC to improve the capability of the former point-to-point WDM system. OADM, which is an important apparatus in WDM, is studied theoretically and experimentally. And four practical tunable OADM is made and used in communication scheme of 4*2.5 Gbit/s. The following is the main content in this dissertation:(1) The principle and structure of all different types of OADM, especially based on fiber grating, is studied.(2) Many tunable technologies, especially cantilever beam technology, are studied. And they are also used in tunable fiber grating OADM.(3) Four tunable OADM are manufactured and broad band source and EDFA are also made to measure the characteristics of tunable OADM.(4) The OADM is also used in WDM system of 4*2.5 Gbit/s and eye diagram can hold a good view after transiting 100 Km. So the OADM made by ourselves is proved to have high signal noise ratio, small cross-talk and be practical.
