Traveling wave tube, which is the core-unit of electronic system such as electronic countermeasure, decoy, phase-array radar, and satellite communication, is a very important microwave power amplifier. It is of significant and special use in military of electronic warfare.With the development of electronic warfare system, now in order to get better characteristics of the TWT, such as the power and gain, the designers do much more work; and the meantime take several ways to minimize the TWT.One of the factors what impact on the miniature and improve the characteristics of TWT is the thermal, which is produced after the TWT begins to work. So the research of thermal characteristics of the TWT plays an important role during the design of the TWT.In this dissertation, each of the TWT component building blocks, such as the electronic gun, slow-wave structure and the collector, is presented. The thermal theories and the thermal conduction ways of each subsystem are discussed. The author presents some advice on the fast working of TWT, the optimization of helix-slow wave structure, and how to minimize the collector. The main context of this dissertation focuses on three aspects.The author simulates and optimizes the helix-slow wave structure by using the high frequency electromagnetism code CST MWS, gets the results which the shape of the supports of helix impacts on the dispersion characteristic and the coupling impedance. Then using ANSYS software, the author analyzes the thermal contact resistant will impact the thermal characteristic of the helix-slow wave structure and get the temperature of the helix slow-wave structure.Whether the electronic gun can start to work in the scheduled operating time or not, and the high temperature after the electronic gun begins to work will impact on the characteristic of the TWT.
