Since the recent wireless communication systems can not satisfy the increasing requirement of services, the third and beyond-third generation (3G/B3G) of mobile communication standards emerge as the time requires, which try to achieve higher data transmit rate in the limited bandwidth. The recent research results show that the Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology can evidently increase the system capacity. As one of the key signal processing technology of MIMO, the Space-Time-Code (STC) can achieve diversity and coding gain from the joint coding both in space and time field, while without any increase of bandwidth. Nowadays, the STC has been widely studied and made many important progresses, since its birth in 1990s.In this dissertation, the theory and characters of MIMO and STC are both studied. Then, the outfield testing work is carried out based on the MIMO testing equipments. Also, the low complexity decoding algorithm for space-time block code (STBC) is emphasized and studied as well, which can make it convenient for practical applications. The research works of this dissertation are organized as follow:(1) Firstly, the MIMO which is the key to B3G system is introduced based on the history of mobile communication system. As the core signal processing method, the space-time code is also emphasized, especially its research course. However, if people want to make the STC more convenient for the practical application systems, there are still many works need to be done.(2) Secondly, the basic theory and system model of MIMO are studied and analyzed while the capacity formulas of MIMO system are given, then the varieties of MIMO diversity are presented, especially the transmit diversity technology. Simulation results show the significant potential of MIMO in increasing the system capacity.(3) Cooperating with the 863 project team, varieties of outfield testing are carried out. The valuable data got from the testing sufficiently verifies the potential of MIMO.
