The collection of real-time traffic data, such as traffic load, average travel speed and vehicle classification, plays a critical role in the intelligent transportation system. Technological innovations have given rise to different types of traffic detectors. Conventional detectors, for example, inductive loop, detectors using ultrasonic, microwave, or infrared, have been put into use for several decades. Meanwhile, a promising approach, video-based measurement system, has developed quickly. Since it has many advantages, for instance, wider-area detection and superior flexibility, many researches have been done in this area.Upon the background of detecting and recognition moving vehicles in an intelligent video-based road traffic surveillance system, we focus our research on some issues as follows:1. In this thesis, we focus our research on some hard issues in detecting moving objects, such as updating background image, eliminate the disturbances of moving cast shadow, and light change , and propose a robust algorithm of detecting moving vehicles on road.2. In this paper, we presented a feasible project for vehicle recognition based on analysis of many object recognition algorithm.3. The above research works were apply to an intelligent traffic data collection system.The proposed algorithm of detecting moving vehicles in this thesis, which has important theoretic meaning and application value, is a universal method in the research area of video surveillance. It can be easily generalized to the applications with different situations, and will have a wide application prospect as well.
