ControlNet and ProfiBus-DP are two of the most popular fieldbuses on the control layer in the world, which are widely used because of their excellent network performance. In this article, the characteristics of both fieldbuses are described in detail including MAC, message structure and network mode. The article also describes the CIP protocol, which is adopted by ControlNet.Responsiveness, generally as message delay time, is one of the most important characteristics of fieldbus. According to the MAC mechanism, the whole process of sending message can be simulated in the computer, so the relationship between some network references and message delay time can be analyzed in detail. Through the modeling and simulation of data link layer protocol, some useful results are obtained to optimize the construction and performance of the network of these two fieldbuses. Some other performance of filedbus is also analyzed in this article. The article is made up of 6 chapters and sections and a brief description is given as follows:Chapterl presents the development of fieldbus and eight kinds of international standard fieldbuses.Chapter2 describes the protocol of ControlNet and ProfiBus-DP, including MAC, the structure of the message and the communication mode.Chapter3 analyzes the networking model of ControlNet and ProfiBus-DP. Some useful results are obtained by the means of modeling and simulation.Chapter4 evaluates the network performance of ControlNet and ProfiBus-DP, including their function, coding efficiency, network efficiency and time delay.Chapter5 focuses on the development of fieldbus in the future.Chapter6 gives a summary of this article.
