Since W3C published XML specification 1. 0 (Extansible Makeup Language) in 1998, XML has fleetly put up the superiority in storage and exchange of data. After developped in only a few years, XML has become the standard of data expression and data exchange on Web. It has turned into the leading data in Internet, and revealed formidable libido. With the information increasing continuously in Internet, how to store and manage the XML data effectively is quite outstanding issue in the face of various network applications. Presently, the research on storing and managing the XML data is mainly focused on these two aspects, using relational database (XED- XML Enable Database) and using the native XML database (NXD-Native XML datadabe) .Though NXD offers powerful support on storing and managing the XML data , as a rising technology of the database , contrasting NXD with XED and evaluations about the operation performance in stroe, query, update, and so on, are only a few. The cetral work of this paper including:Lucubrates storage-modes of NXD, and presents a quantificational evaluation model for several different stroage-modes. Lastly, via the example data and this model reaches the best storage-mode.Based on specialities and processing ways of the XML document, the paper designs and founds the evaluation frame for contrasting NXD with XED.From different aspects, such as management of database, supported XML technologies and standards, management interface, programmatic APIs etc, the paper completes the functional contrast research between NXD and XED.Via the instance data evaluates and contrasts the performance differences between NXD and XED. In the paper the aspects of influencing performance involve the XML document element type, element count, complexity of conditions, large quantities of processes, path depth, element location and so on.Through the test analysis and contrastive research, the paper puts forword the golden rule for the programmers who are setting up the appliactions based on XML database, and tries to provide a reliable reference in XML field.
