UMTS is the first wirless technology in which serious emphasis on end-to-end QOS has been given; its standards body 3GPP has established a common end-to-end QOS framework. End-to-end QOS control is an ability that is currently absent among many ISPs, rendering them unable to offer guaranteed services. Controlling QOS across the network has been considered by the industry as a critical advantage that enables service providers to differentiate compete in an increasingly competitive market. For 3G wireless operators or service provider, the ability to provide consistent policy-based QOS across the network offers business advantages over the current wireless ISPs,improving both revenue and profit.In this paper we am to study the protocols and the QOS architecture of RAN in 3G. system, to discuss QOS in ATM-based UTRAN, and to construct network model of UTRAN according to the protocols of RAN. With reference to the application demand of the 3th generation mobile communication system, we will analysis and study the protocols and QOS of network.At first Iin this paper we will discuss the standards of protocols of WCDMA, based on which RAN network model. Simulation scenarios are developed to study the QOS of RAN according to the network model. Secondly we will set up the simulation platform of RAN in UMTS, including wireless interface and Iub protocol model, such as RLC, MAC and so on. By this we am to study the QOS of UMTS radio access network. Then based on the simulation platform, the QOS of UMTS radio access network is analysised at detail. At last this paper will analysis the special problem(cell breath) in network planning and design of WCDMA network.As the setup of simulation platform is concerned, this paper will discuss the node model and process model of the main network element in the WCDMA system. By studying infrastructure and protocols of RAN in UMTS, we am to improve the QOS of mobile communication network in order to do some modifications on RRM to improve the QOS of users.Due to some limitations, the thesis's work on the QOS of RAN in UMTS need to take further improvements in future investigation. Further efforts should be taken in the subsequent work.
