Edge Detection is one of the basal contents on image processing and analysis, on whichpeople have not as yet find a satisfactory way out. The edge which is one of the mostimportant fundamental feature of an image, embodying the other features such as positionand outline etc., is widely used in image analysis and processing such as feature description,image segmentation, image enhancement, pattern recognition and image compression etc.,So Edge Detection is the research hotspot in the technology of image processing andanalysis all the while, on which the new theory and methods are put forward constantly.Mathematical Morphology is a novel image processing method, being the one that isbuilding on the theory of geometry and using assemble theory to quantificationally depictgeometric structure. Mathematical Morphology is deemed to be a powerful tool to analyzeand process the geometric character of a picture, whose principle idea is using a structureelement of carrying object character to collect image information. Because of the specialadvantage that structure element has, mathematical morphology image process becomes animportant research field of digital image process.In an image, the conjoint pixels, whose gray-level value is non-consecutive or changesgreatly considered image edge. In mathematics, this distributing change is often depicted bygradient. In this paper, we introduce the definition of image edge, difference and gradient,amply summarize the traditional and new type edge detection algorithms, analyze theirmerit and disadvantage and give the test results. For our research work develop based on themathematical morphology, we amply introduce the origin and development of mathematicsmorphology and from binary morphology to gray morphology extensively study themorphological operators and their qualities. Then the performance of morphological filtersare mainly discussed and based on a kind of omnidirectional morphological filter, weproposed some idea to mend it.In the research of edge detection algorithm, we firstly give the definition of themorphological edge and image noise, then analyze and discuss the avail of differentstructure elements in morphological operations, in which we happen to find the better use ofstructure elements. And then we study the basic and antinoise morphological operators andfind that some mathematics morphological operators have ability of resisting noise, at thesame time, all images have certain noise which influence detecting result except ideal image,so our research has practical value.
