Nowadays, workflow technology is one of the fields developing most rapidly. Workflow system is the most important foundation of business process management (BPM). On the basis of setting up, deploying and implementing the operating process model of the enterprise, the operating process will be more efficient and safe, and GUI will be friendlier. With the development of Internet/Intranet technology, the scale of the enterprise is larger and larger. When process entities of all the branches are in the heterogeneous, autonomous and distributing environment, distributed workflow management technology has made a great progress. But currently, we don' t have a standard architecture to support integration of distributed application, because most of the commercial distributed workflow management systems and research models have made use of centered management system, namely in the distributed workflow execution, there is only one primary workflow engine in charge of controlling, coordinating and cooperating the subordinate workflow engines. This architecture has some faults during running. In the same time, due to some temporal problems within the workflow system not settled, the area of the application is limited. So, under the analysis of former distributed workflow architectures, we propose a distributed workflow management system based on temporal-ECA rules and event-communication mechanism. The system obeys workflow system reference model of WFMC, and it is universal distributed workflow execution model. It completes tasks in workflow by temporal-ECA rules of the workflow engines.We make use of the function of TL in describing temporal conditions and the characteristics of ECA rules in dynamic interaction to expand distributed workflow model, resolve the problems of ECA rule' s deficient semantic function in describing complex process related to time, define the processby activity diagram, add model elements to activity diagram, enlarge the describing ability of workflow model, analyze the execution condition of the models, put forward a distributed workflow architecture based . on temporal-ECA rules, and introduce the scheme into hospitalization insurance. We illustrate the key technologies of this system, especially the composition of the workflow engine, and divide the workflow system into modules. In this system, process and activity are encapsulated in the distributed workflow engine, and all the engines are independent with each other. This system has the characteristics of integration, openness, and dynamic reconstruction, etc.
