Data compression has a centuries-old history, and image data compression and video signal process have been fleetly developed, impelled by the requirement of Internet and multi-media system. Wavelet theory is a new tool for information process, and it has been widely adopted in image process field.In this paper, it is studied to compress image with wavelet transform, and the application of Set Patitioning in Hierarchial Trees (SPIHT) in image process is researched. A hardware system, which is used to capture and process a still image, is designed, based on TMS320DSC25. The image is captured by a charge-coupled-device (CCD), and is encoded and stored by the hardware system. SPIHT algorithm has been embedded into this system and used to compress image data. This system on chip has wider application field in practice.
