In recent years, as the development of computer vision, visualization in scientific computing, remote sensing technology, computer graphics and their interfacing discipline, it is very popularin creating three-dimensional terrain model which has highly level ofdetail by terrain data captured by space and aerial photogrammetry. The real-time rendering and visualization of terrain is becoming thekey problem of technical researches related to virtual reality, geographic information system, computer graphics, visualization inscientific computing and so on. These days, real-time rendering ofthousands upon thousands triangles can be done by using many topgrade graphic workstations, however, the terrain data is too large, itexceeds the ability of real-time rendering and memory managementof the common graphics. So how to implement the visualization oflarge-scale terrain environment is become a bottleneck problem ofterrain visualization domain.Based on such consideration, this dissertation uses virtualreality technology to develop a three-dimensional real-time systemwith Visual C++6.0 and OpenGL graghics library. The dissertationmainly introduces the generation algorithm of three-dimentionalmulti-resolution terrain, texture segmenting algorithm of grey-levelairscape,and display technology of three-dimensional environment.Itprovides reseach foundation for the military projects such aseployment of weapons, estimation of weapons'efficiency andfunction and so on.The first chapter introduces state of the art of virtual realityvisualization and author's main jobs. The second chapter analyses complex terrain model's real timeand dynamic simplifying and multi-resolution display.
