By utilizing the spatial diversity, it is shown that multi-antenna systems can improve the channel capacity, bandwidth usage, and the reliability of data transmission. In this thesis, the capacity of multi-antenna systems is derived by using Shannon's theorem. We show that the capacity is dependent on two key parameters: the channel matrix H and Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). To verify this, we first model two models of NLOS multi-antenna system with near field scattering. The scatters in the near field model are arranged in the line-like array and ring-like array respectively. Assuming the transmitted signal is planar wave, we implement the simulation on both models with the carrier frequency given by 2G Hz. The number of transmitter antennas and receiver antennas are 3×3 and 7×7 respectively. The simulation results show that the channel capacity will change as a function of the elements spacing. The impacts of the element spacing and spread angular on the channel capacity are different in Uncorrelated High Rank (UHR) and Uncorrelated Low Rank (ULR) models. Since the equivalent SNR is highly related to the synchronization performance in a practical TDMA/TDD multi-antenna system, we further our study and propose a new synchronization method used in the time division duplex (TDD) systems of ZTE. The scheme will include an optimum acquisition mode and then the tracking mode using EVM algorithm and an adaptive filter. According to the data we collected from outside environments, this new method will provide a striking performance gain of the system. Threrefore, the OEM version of the commercial PHS base station has been replaced by the base station with this new synchronization method. Compared with the previous performance report data, we will show that the PHS base station employing our new synchronization method have obtained great performance gains in various practical performance aspects.
