With the coming of 21 century, computer technology comes into a new stage full of opportunities and challenges, that is the post-PC times. In this times, embedded system has became the mainstream instead of PC, and various digital products have became the main tools for information handling. Along with the quick extension of embedded application field, it request more higher performance and more chipper price embedded OS, Linux is the most attractive one for its source opening, various hardware platform supporting and plenty of application program provision. Porting Linux into embedded field is heatedly discussed in academe recently, and it's just the theme of this paper. Because of it's inhere speciality, there are some problems must be resolved for porting Linux to embedded field. First, we must reduce the size of its footprint, so it can run as an embedded OS under the condition of insufficient system resource; Secondly, the embedded Linux must be configurable so that it can adapt itself to various of embedded application; Thirdly, we must fasten the booting speed of embedded Linux, if we use it in the PDA and informational home appliance field; And finally, it is important for embedded OS that offering convenient tools to assist user to develop, and building a cross-development environment on Windows platform. So in this paper, the main research point is focus on Linux tailoring, configuring, booting, and its cross-compile environment on Windows. And we have gotten some achievements in the process of resolving these problems, by offering a embedded Linux which can be used in PDA field on X86 hardware platform. In this paper, there are six chapters. The first one is introduction, it introduce the concept of embedded system, embedded OS, and the characteristic of Linux, at the same time it point out how this project coming from and what problem we must resolve for porting Linux as embedded OS. The 2nd chapter focus on Linux tailoring, it discuss the technology of Linux tailoring from various aspects. The 3rd chapter research the configurable capacity of embedded Linux and use component technology to realize it. The 4th discuss the develop process of embedded software, and build a cross-compile environment for embedded Linux application development. The 5th chapter research the booting technology and consider fastening embedded Linux booting speed. And the last chapter is the summary, it summarize the above work,...
