The research of this dissertation focuses on polarization analysis of projection display system and development of polarizing element. The development of display technology will be large screen and high resolution. Due to its high efficiency, high outputting luminance and low cost, liquid crystal projection display system is widely used nowadays. Polarization conversion system is an important component of projection display system, and it is closely related to the light usage and contrast of projectors.The dissertation gives the detail analysis and calculation of the polarization aberration of projection display system. Broadband, wide-angle polarization beam splitter is fabricated which has a large acceptance. Subsequently, we design nonpolarizing color splitting filters which can greatly improve the performance of projection display system.Firstly, polarization aberration in projection display system is analyzed in detail. Polarization aberration is calculated based on the theory of Jones polarization ray tracing. The dark-state output and extinction ratio of system are also calculated. Furthermore, the characteristic of polarized light on the exit pupil is given out, and the variation of polarization aberration at different F/# illumination light is analyzed. At last, the influence of monitoring errors of thin film on the polarization aberration is analyzed. From these data, it is conclude that the monitoring errors have great impact on the polarization aberration and contrast of the system. The analysis method can also be applied to other large aperture optical systems.In order to increase the usage of light energy and improve the equality of illumination on the screen, we design and fabricate the polarizing beam splitter array. In order to improve the contrast of projection display system, we design and fabricate a broadband, wide-angle polarizing beam splitter which has a large acceptance. The design was based on computer aided design method. The average transmittance of p-polarization is larger than 93%, and the average transmittance of s- polarization is 0.095%.In order to reduce stray light and dark-state output, it is necessary to deignnonpolarizing thin film edge filters for color separation and color recombination in projection display system. The novel design method is based on a broad-band Fabry-Perot thin film interference filter in which both sides of transmittance band can be used as initial designs of long-wave-pass filter or short-wave-pass filter, and through suitable refinement it is possible to achieve zero separation between two polarization components. The spectral splitting at 50% transmittance is 0.16nm for long wave pass filter and 0.1nm for short wave pass filter.
