With the sharp increase of Internet users and the fast development of the technology of multimedia, the digital production has been more and more popular. It has become urgent that how to protect the copyright of digital production and prevent the pirate of the digital production because it is much easer to transmit, copy, tamper and pirate the digital production. As digital watermarking technology is an effective tool of copyright protection, it has gained more and more concerns in many ways since it appeared in 1993.Digital watermarking technology in the application of multimedia signal and its corresponding algorithms are studied in this paper. The paper begins with a discussion of some essential conceptions such as definition, category, application areas, existing representative algorithms and dimensions of performance. We mainly focus on the common theory of digital watermarking and its fundamental algorithms in Section Two. The digital image discrete wavelet (DWT) is introduced in Section Three. Section Four gives a new digital watermarking algorithm using multi-resolution wavelet transform. The paper concludes with Section Five.A new algorithm is proposed in this paper. It makes use of the multi-resolution characteristic of the wavelet transform, the division of image and the Arnold transform. The experimental result shows that it has strong robustness in the JPEG compression and other common digital image processing.
