With the rapid development of microprocessor technology and software technology, as well as the increasing matureness and widespread of network technology, networked embedded systems are widely used. The embedded systems is becoming the center of interest in the IT industry and bringing along a large market. Meanwhile, the substantive embedded applications calls for better performance and functionality of embedded systems. 8/16-bit microcontrollers can' t meet the speed and memory demand of the Internet embedded devices. Owing to the rapid development of integrated circuits (IC) technology, the embedded technology based on 32-bit RISC processors is becoming much more popular. ARM(Advandced RISC Machines) is the industry' s leading provider of 32-bit embedded RISC microprocessors with almost 75% of the market. ARM offers a wide range of processor cores based on a common architecture and delivering high performance together with low power consumption and system dost. The Ethernet gateway based on ARM chip and uClinux system researched in this thesis is an embedded system based on 32-bit ARM microprocessor S3C4510 produced by Samsung. At first, the hardware system taking S3C4510B as the core was built. And then we programmed booloader and ported the uClinux OS to the hardware system. After that, the communication application software was designed to implement the communication between Ethernet and RS485 fieldbus system making use of the perfect TCP/IP protocol stack of uClinux. The thesis introduces the background knowledge of embedded system, network and operating system. It also discusses the way of selecting the entire scheme, the hardware circuits and their debugging, bootloader code, the compile of the kernel of embedded operating system uClinux and file system, as well as the design of application software. At last, a sum-up and prospect of this embedded system are given.
