With the widely use of portable computer and PDA, wireless communication has enjoyed a rapid growth, which stimulates the development of all kinds of network and protocol, for example, WLAN, GSM, PCS, CDMA and UMTS. Now the network is developing to be able to respond any application wherever and whenever the customer is.The design and research of Ad Hoc network is driven by the request of the new network and application. It is a self-organized wireless network independent of the fixed station. It is easy and fast to organize the whole net without the limitation of space and time. It is very useful not only in rescue, meeting, war field and monitor system from the long distance, but also the extension of the end of the network. An ad hoc network is defined to be a dynamically reconfigurable mobile wireless network with no fixed infrastructure or central control, which makes the problems more difficult than the others. So the existing technology can not be used in the Ad Hoc network directly. But with more and more attention on the Ad Hoc network, it has developed fast. This article introduces the existing protocols of the medium access control layer and net layer in the Ad Hoc network. And it focuses on the efficiency of data packet transmission and reconnection timeout after the route failure. It gives a new design to solve this problem.Chapter one introduces the Ad Hoc network. It focuses the system structure and the existing technology.Chapter two gives the systematic details of many kinds of new protocol in medium access layer and net layer of the Ad Hoc network.Chapter three is the key part of this article. At first, it describes the DSR protocol. And then, it applies the new method to increase the efficiency of the whole net and decrease the reconnection timeout. At last, it gives the simulation result and makes a conclusion from it.Chapter four introduces many kinds of development direction of Ad Hoc network.
