With the rapid development of mobile communication, we have been stepping in the third generation of mobile communication (3G) recently. That will bring about the more superior quality of voice, the more colorful multimedia services and the more added values. At the same time, it becomes necessary that the function of mobile station location can be provided. The research on location service has been a hot point.The mobile station location technologies in wireless communication system involve many techniques and extend to broad areas. This paper discusses mainly the location technology based on TDOA and AOA in WCDMA system. Firstly, the location technology is analyzed and summarized. Location with TDOA is the most promising method in WCDMA system at present. Besides, smart antenna will be implemented in 3G, and location with smart antenna will achieve better precision. Two effective location system designs are presented in this paper, OTDOA-IPDL and TDOA-AOA.Algorithms involved in the designs are discussed and analyzed, which are compared and chosen by simulation to optimize the designs. To reduce error caused by MAI and near-far effect, a decision algorithm is adopted and analyzed by mathematics, which improves the veracity of location estimation. For AOA estimation, the analysis and comparison of various algorithms are carried out, and a time-spatial estimation method based on code filter is proposed. The algorithm of Chan, which is for solving TDOA location equations, is extended to solve hybrid TDOA-AOA location equations. All the algorithms above are simulated and analyzed before reaching last conclusions.A mobile station location simulator based on MATLAB is designed to evaluate the location technologies. Emphasis is put on the channel model for the simulation. The simulation results prove the proposals discussed in this paper are valid. In particular, TDOA-AOA method using smart antenna achieves better location performance and improves location success probability and location estimation precision.
