Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an advanced branch of science in the current development of science and technology, and a newly arising and rapidly developing branch with continuous emergence of new mentality, new concepts, new theories, and new technology. It can be viewed as a comprehensive marginal branch of science, for it is based on computer science, cybernetics, informatics, neural psychology, philosophy, linguistics and so on.Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is a newly developed intersectional branch of science, involving biology, electronics, computer science, mathematics and physics. It has a promising prospect in engineering. ANN is a new intelligent system imitating the neural structure of living creatures. It is a network with a multi-nerve-cell connection based on the theories of biologic neural network, focusing on the theories and methods of information disposal and distribution in main complex multidimensional system. It can be used to solve practical problems in engineering. ANN includes many models, among which the most widely used one with most intuitional, most comprehensible principle is multi-order forward back-propagation neural network and Error Back-Propagation (often shortened as BP).This essay starts off with the basic theory and concepts of ANN, undertaking a profound analysis and research on the theory, structure, training and learning process of BP and its defects in chapter 4. In chapters 5 and 6 present a study on the practical application of BP, analyzing the problems arising in the training and learning process and the results from the experiments, pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of BP, and the existing problems in when applying in practical work and the aspects calling for improvement.
