It will be imperative under the situation that we build more and more sppedways to realize the vehical identification and intelligent management. Based on analyzing and investigating freeway ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) system, discussing XML-related standards and the application on distributed system,about related database. This thesis constructes a distributed freeway ETC management system based on XML and the vehicle style and license plate recognization, and then describes the design and realization of part of system. Firstly this thesis simply introduces freeway ETC system, describes XML technology, discusses development status, explained XML and the relationships between XML and the closely related SGML and HTML, and then analyzes XML's advantages and disadvantages.Secondly this thesis discusses the methods of analying and processing of images,discusses XML-related standard, then introduces the architecture of XML Fundamental standard and application standard, then gives more detailed description on important standard, such as XML Schema,Namespace in XML,Document Object Module.Thirdly based on preprocessing of license plate images, ,locating the vehicle license plate,taking some effctive methods of feature extraction,this thesis describes the realization of the vehicle style and license plate recognization in the system.Forthly this thesis analyzes and investigates the freeway ETC system, constructes a distributed freeway ETC management system based on XML according to the application that XML is in the distributed system,database, and then describes the design of database ,data operation ,component of system , and then introduced the realization of every layer in the system ,management software in the server, describes the communication mechanism between components.At last, this thesis ends with a conclusion over the whole work.
