All-optical wavelength converters will become key components in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems and be key building blocks for hybrid WDM/OTDM optical networks. Among all the operating mechanisms, wavelength converters exploiting the strong nonlinearities of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) have been studied extensively in recent years since they are promising. We focus on all-optical wavelength converter based on cross gain (XGM) in SOA, Theoretical research and numerical simulation have been carried out as the followings:In chapter one. The necessity of the combination between WDM and OTDM in the future all-optical network is analyzed in which the importance and principle and application of all-optical wavelength conversion technology is summarized and introduced in data format conversion at node in the hybrid WDM/OTDM optical networks according to the present experiments. In chapter two. The principle of Fabery-Perot laser is analyzed of which the static and dynamic performance are studied with the solution of single-mode rate equation, which base the theoretical analysis and numerical calculation for all-optical wavelength converter based on SOA.In chapter three. Theoretical foundation of SOA used as wavelength converter is fully studied. Two basic equations about pulse propagation and rate in SOA and the principle of three wavelength converters based on nonlinearities of SOA are deducted and analyzed. By comparison we aim al wavelength converter based on SOA-XGM in our studies. In chapter four, Multi-section dynamic modeling of all-optical wavelength converter based on XGM in SOA is established. General equations are deducted with residual facet reflectivity considered or not. and method for analysis of chirp performance is studied. Which provide a right math tool for studies on performance on wavelength converter based on SOA-XGM in the following chapter. In chapter five. Extinction ratio and chirp and crosstalk of the converted signal are analyzed in detail in wavelength converter based on SOA-XGM in the counter-propagating mode by modified equations for wavelength converter. Which provide theoretic foundation for performance optimization of wavelength converter in optical packaging and optical routing. In chapter six. Data format conversion at node in hybrid WDM/OTDM optical networks by all-optical wavelength converter based on XGM in SOA is studied. Performance on transmission in fiber-optic and time division multiplexing (TDM) signal multiplexed and de-multiplexed are analyzed in detail by simplified equations for wavelength converter and split-step Fourier method, where dispersion compensation is under consideration. In chapter seven, Performance optimization on wavelength converter basedSOA-XGM is simply introduced from the aspects of experiment scheme and fabrication and so on. Then summarize the whole paper and propose some advice.
