Fingerprint is the most reliable research object for its uniqueness and permanence. Automatic fingerprint identification system is applied in wide range of application domains such as national ID card, electronic commerce and automated banking.Fingerprint identification system include steps of fingerprint images collection, image preprocessing, feature extraction and matching. The paper discusses and studies a number of problems about the automatic fingerprint identification system and fingerprint Identification algorithms are summarized. Then we focus on the image preprocessing and feature extraction.Preprocessing in fingerprint identification is critical to subsequent feature extracting and matching .In this paper, A combinatorial algorithm based on the directional segmentation is proposed for the preprocessing of the fingerprint images, This combinatorial algorithm is composed of foreground/background segmentation, directional image computation, directional filtering, local self-adaptive binarization, noise elimination and thinning, such an algorithm can enhance the fingerprint images and reduce the effect of the rotation and shift of the images on the fingerprint recognition. After preprocessing, we use a simple and effective algorithm to extract minutia.Experiments show that the algorithms we mentioned above can enhance the quality of fingerprint image efficiently and it is robust against those noisy fingerprints, these algorithms have good process result and run faster and easily to be programmed which has effectively solved the problem of fingerprint image's preprocess.
