A binocular stereo vision system is developed in this paper. It includes two CCD cameras, a structural laser and two suited filter lens. It can avoid the disturbing of the welding arc and obtain clear image which reflects the character and the departure of the weld seam. The difficult problem of the Feature Point Matching algorithm in stereo vision is solved with the structural laser.A image obtaining and processing system is set up by Visual C++, which is based on the platform of Windows 2000. The information of the weld seam is analyzed .The 2D image coordinates of the seam feature and the character of the seam can be obtained.An algorithm of 3D coordinates calculation method is proposed in this paper. It can reconstruct the 3D coordinates of the seam with the 2D image coordinates of the seam feature point and obtain precise information of the seam. The experiments of the reconstructing of typical seams have been done. The results show that when there is no welding arc, the accuracy of the seam reconstruction is very high. But when there has the disturbing of welding arc, the square joint and the U type joint cannot be reconstructed with high precision.
